Vintage Design
Music binder in stained beech wood, attributed to Gabriel Viardot (1830 – 1904). This Parisian cabinetmaker, specialized in the production of Japanese furniture, was awarded – among others – a Legion of Honour in 1885.
It is composed of an openwork panel at the top, carved with decorations characteristic of Asian Art, such as an imaginary Reptilian creature and a grouping of flowers. This background also serves as a support for a small shelf, whose sides were carved in opposition to each other.
Underneath, this piece of furniture offers two intermediate shelves, connected to each other by convex protruding uprights. Those at the front, in Angles, are decorated with winged animals in Bronze. The upper edges of this open niche are embellished with openwork beech galleries.
The bottom of this piece of furniture is made up of four music racks, compartments initially designed to store music scores. The sides of this lower part are partially closed by cut-out panels, forming Oriental Decorations.
The Artist Viardot has imagined here a light occasional piece of furniture, with reasonable dimensions, and whose Exoticism will be appreciated.
