Vintage Design
This remarkable Shanxi-sourced sideboard, produced in 1860, would have made an ideal counter for a Chinese apothecary; the lower section affording storage for larger bottles, while six upper drawers served to house herbs and plants used for medicinal purposes. Each of these drawers is separated into six compartments and labeled at the front, with the original labels still visible but wearing an aged patina that complements the dark lacquer finish.
Crafted from elm wood with robust frames and robust surface, the counter showcases a unique blend of lighter elm and darker lacquer sections, displaying the signs of its enduring existence. It would make an ideal sideboard, with ample space on the shelf underneath for storing crockery or perfect for placing wicker or seagrass baskets on to store in a modern way.
